Summer composting ideas
Don't forget to keep adding your kitchen waste such as fresh vegetable peelings and fruit waste. Don't add any cooked, processed food, or any meat or dairy products.
The hot weather attracts flies to the bin which although part of the natural process of composting can be a nuisance. Try covering the waste with cardboard as you put it in the bin to prevent flies coming into contact with the waste. A layer of soil would also help.
Any dead flower heads can be added to your bin as you keep the garden looking nice. As bedding plants start to look tired, pop them in the bin if you plant out any new ones.
Aim for a 50:50 mix of wet, green materials and dry, brown materials as you fill your bin. This produces the best compost.
If you find ants are a problem, it may be just a bit too dry. Adding more wet/green materials may help or sprinkle in some water if the bin is very dry. Dry compost stops the compost process from working correctly and needs attention.
Over time, compost will improve the soil structure, aiding drainage, retaining moisture and nutrients. For more information visit www.recyclenow.com/compost
